Dyson’s V15 Detect uses frickin’ laser beams to eradicate every last speck of dust

Strapping a laser onto a vacuum cleaner sounds like something an overexcited toddler might suggest at a rather strange product focus group, but it’s exactly what Dyson’s done to its latest cordless vacuum cleaner.

At first glance you might mistake the new Dyson V15 Detect for one of its existing cordless models. Switch it on, though, and you’ll be met with a bright sweeping beam of eerie green light, blasting out from the front of the cleaner head like some sort of mystical proton beam. This specially designed laser illuminates dust, dirt and other particles that would otherwise be much harder or impossible to see with the naked eye and will come in particularly handy for darker floors that tend to hide dirt.

Beyond lighting up muck with its laser-guided detection system, the V15 Detect can also tell you how much dust and dirt you’ve sucked up, displaying it on a screen at the top of the device like a satisfying dust-killing progress bar. This is made possible thanks to an acoustic piezo sensor, which features carbon-fibre filaments in the cleaner head that can pick up and detect microscopic particles such as dust, counting up to 15,000 times a second. When dust is sucked up it hits this sensor and the resulting minuscule vibrations are converted to electrical signals, resulting in the on-screen counter.

Not enough tech for you? Then you’ll be pleased to hear that the V15 is also clever enough to automatically increase the suction power in auto mode when it detects an increase in the amount of dust. This is good news for those of us who tend to stick their cordless vacuums on low-power mode to save battery, as it should, in theory, deliver the perfect amount of power while helping preserve battery life.

Other improvements include a new anti-tangle hair screw, which is a fancy name for a conical brush bar that shrugs off hair without getting tangled up. Combined with a new cleaner head that has comb-like polycarbonate teeth to automatically clean the brush as it’s spinning, you’ll hopefully never have to deal with the unpleasant chore of dehairing your vacuum cleaner head ever again.

A new Dyson announcement wouldn’t be complete without a boost in the suction department either: the V15 Detect has a new motor that generates up to 230 air watts of suction, compared to the current flagship Dyson V11 Outsize’s 220 air watt offering.

If that’s all piqued your tech-laden dirt-removing fantasies, you’ll be glad to hear that the Dyson V15 Detect will be “available soon” for £599 and you can register your interest if you want to be kept up to date on the launch date.
